من المعلوم من عقيدة أهل السنة والجماعة، أن الإيمان باليوم الآخر ركن من أركان الإيمان، وأن له علامات بين يديه، ومن هذه العلامات ظهور المهدي رضي الله عنه ونزول عيسى عليه السلام. وفي هذا الزمان الذي نعيش فيه، ابتليت أمة الإسلام بأناس نصبوا أنفسهم للفتي والقول على الله بلا علم، فأخذوا يردون النصوص الثابتة في ظهور المهدي ونزول عيسى عليه السلام ويشككون المسلمين في معتقداتهم من المغيبات التي يجب الإيمان بها، فضللوا المسلمين بشبهاتهم السقيمة، ومعتقداتهم الباطلة. لذلك عمد "محمد الأحمد الأثري" إلى وضع كتابه الذي بين أيدينا والذي يدافع فيه عن شرع الحق، ويرد على هؤلاء المشككين بالعقيدة وبما جاءت به. وذلك عبر إثباته للنصوص الدالة على نزول المهدي المنتظر وعيسى عليه السلام في الكتاب والسنة، وكذلك إثباته لأقوال أهل العلم والمعرفة في هذا المخصوص. وليحيط بكافة جوانب موضوعة قام بتقسيم بحثه إلى قسمين عرض في الأول لمسألة ظهور المهدي رضي الله عنه وعرض في الثاني لمسألة نزول عيسى ابن مريم عليه السلام أما الخاتمة فخصصها لكلام أهل العلم، ولردهم على من خالف معتقد أهل السنة والجماعة في هذا الباب.
