التوبة إلى الله تعالى والإنابة إليه سبحانه من أهم قواعد الإسلام، وهي أول مقدمات سالكي طريق الآخرة. وقد تضافرت الأدلة من الكتاب والسّنة الشريفة على وجوب التوبة كما في قوله تعالى: "وتوبوا إلى الله جميعاً أيّهَ المؤمنون لعلكم تفلحون". وقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :" يا أيها الناس توبوا إلى الله، فإني أتوب إليه في اليوم مئة مرة". رواه مسلم.
وبناءً على ما تقدم، يستعرض مؤلف الكتاب الأستاذ محمد بن رياض الأحمد السلفي الأثري شرائط التوبة وموجباتها الصحيحة وآثارها وغير ذلك من معاني التوبة الصادقة الخالصة لله تعالى. ثم يقدم للقارىء – كما يقول – قصصاً واقعية لأناس كانوا في وقت من الأوقات منغمسين في الملذات، تائهين في الضلالات، مبتعدين عن رب البريات، فالتهوا بدنيا غرارة، وزخرفات فانية (...) في الضلالات، مبتعدين عن رب البريات، فالتهوا بدنيا غرارة، وزخرفات فانية (...) إلى أن تداركتهم رحمة الله تعالى، فمن عليهم بالتوبة والإنابة (...) ولما كانت القصص تؤثر في النفوس، وتتفاعل معها القلوب، أحببت – والكلام للمؤلف – جمع هذه القصص المؤثرة حول توبة أولئك التائبين، لتكون حافزاً لكل من أسرف على نفسه أو قصر في حق ربه، أن يتدارك نفسه بالتوبة والإنابة ...".
وفي هذا الإطار أيضاً ، بيّن المؤلف ضرر الذنوب والمعاصي وآثارها وعقوباتها عند الله، مع أمثلة من الأمم السابقة مثل قوم عاد وثمود ولوط وشعيب وغرق فرعون وقومه في البحر وخسف الأرض بقارون وداره وماله وأهله، وهلاك قوم صالح بالصيحة وغيرهم على مرّ التاريخ.
