لقد وعدت من قبل أن أبذل محاولة لكتابة تاريخ العائلة، وقد فرغت من ذلك الآن، وها هي حصيلة جهدي أضعها بين يديك، وهي عبارة عن رواية أرويها لك.
بدأت بطيعة الحال بوالدينا، فبفضلهم صرنا إلى ما نحن عليه، وكثيراً ما طلب مني أن أجيب على السؤال: كيف كان والدك، اللذان أنشأ هذه الأسرة التي فيها الجنرال والأدميرال وأنت القاضي؟ وكان جوابي: "لقد خانتكم الذاكرة، فنحن خمسة أبناء، استشهد منا اثنان في الحرب العالمية الأولى وقد كان أفضلنا".
وسأحدثك الآن عن كل واحد من هؤلاء الأخوة الخمسة، وسأحدثك عن دورهم في الحربين العالميتين، وسأجعل كلا منهم يتحدث عن نفسه، بقدر ما استطعنا، وذلك بتقديم مقتطفات من رسائلهم ومما كانوا يكتبون، وسأحدثك أيضاً عن نفسي، مطنباً في الحديث، لا لسبب إلا لأن هناك الكثير مما يمكن أن يقال، ولأن أسئلة الطلاب تقاطرت علي من كل صوب تسألني عما دفعني إلى ميدان القانون، ولماذا لم أتجه للسياسة، وغير هذه الأسئلة، ولمست رغبة في أن يعرفوا شيئاً عني.
