إن المشكلات الأسرية ليست وليدة العصر الحديث بحضارته المعقدة، إلا أنها في العصر الحالي انتشرت إنتشاراً واسعاً، وأصبح من المتعذر تجاهلها أو السكوت عنها، إذ أن الكثير منها قد يتطور بشكل سلبي في حال لم يتم علاجها مبكراً، وإنطلاقاً من أهمية المناخ الأسري السليم والملائم في تنشئة جيل يخدم نفسه وأمته جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب ليساهم وبشكل علمي أصيل في فهم طبيعة المشكلات الأسرية التي تعاني منها الأسرة العربية.
لقد لاحظ المؤلفان أثناء تأليف الكتاب شح مصادر سيكولوجية المشكلات الأسرية في المكتبة العربية، إذ اقتصرت على بعض التراجم التي لم تضم صورة متكاملة لسيكولوجية المشكلات الأسرية، وبالتحديد لم نجد كتاباً في المكتبة العربية يحمل هذا العنوان، وقد استشار المؤلفان العديد من أعضاء الهيئة التدريسية في الجامعات حول المواضيع التي يمكن أن يتطرق لها هذا الكتاب، ومن الملفت للنظر أن مثل هذا الكتاب مع أهميته للأسرة وللأطفال بالتحديد يؤثر في حياة الأسرة إلا أنه لم يجد الإهتمام المناسب من الباحثين والمؤلفين.
ونود ان نبين بأننا لم نتطرق إلى جميع المشكلات الأسرية وتحليلها من الناحية النفسية، لكننا ركزنا على المشكلات التي نعتقد بأهميتها، والتي يمكن أن تكون أكثر إنتشاراً في مجتمعنا في العصر الحالي، وقد تم التركيز على المشكلة من الناحية النفسية وعلى الوقاية منها، وبمعنى أدق تم الحديث عن مفهوم المشكلة وعلاقة ذلك في علم النفس، وبذلك يتم ربطه في الجانب النفسي، ولم يتم التطرق إلى طرق العلاج حيث إن الكتاب يتطرق إلى طبيعة المشكلات النفسية وليس إلى علاجها.
