تفتقر المكتبة العربية إلى مصدر شامل يغطي تاريخ العرب في الأندلس بدءاً من فتحها سنة 91هـ/710م، وحتى ضياعها سنة897هـ/1492م. والكتب المتوفرة إنما يتعلق كل منها بفترة من الفترات واختصت بجانب دون غيره. إن ما نحن بحاجة إليه حقاً هو كتابه تاريخنا الحقيقي بدقة وموضوعية وأن نلقي الضوء على الجانب المشرق من حضارتنا الزاهرة التي يشكل الوجود العربي في بلاد الأندلس، جزءها المشرق والمشرف ولتظهر مدى تفوق الحضارة العربية الإسلامية في الأندلس على مثيلتها الأوروبية. ورغم الاهتمام المتزايد بكتابه التاريخ والذي ترافق مع نمو الوعي القومي فإن كتابه تاريخ كامل للدولة العربية في الأندلس لم ينل حقه من الاهتمام.
كما لم يتناول أحد العلاقة بين الدولة المحمدية في المغرب والأندلس في عهد أبي يعقوب المنصور، وبين الدولة الأيوبية في مصر وبلاد الشام في عهد صلاح الدين الأيوبي وهي تشير إلى مدى التعاون الذي كان قائماً بين مشرق العالم العربي ومغربه. ومن هنا جاء هذا العمل الذي أراد به مؤلفه سد ثغرة في المكتبة العربة ويلبي حاجة المباحثين والدارسين إلى دراسة شاملة تغطي هذه الفترة.
قسم المؤلف تاريخ الأندلس إلى ست مراحل المرحلة الأولى تغطي الفتح العربي الإسلامي للأندلس 91هـ/138هـ. والمرحلة الثانية137 316هـ، الأندلس إمارة أموية مستقلة عن الخلافة العباسية-المرحلة الثالثة (316-422هـ) الخلافة الأموية في الأندلس. المرحلة الرابعة (422-478هـ) عصر ملوك الطوائف. المرحلة الخامسة (479-642هـ) ضم الأندلس إلى المغرب وعاصمته مراكش المرحلة السادسة (635-897هـ) إمارة غرناطية وضياع الأندلس النهائي.
