إذا كان لكل تاريخ محور، تدور حوله الوقائع وترتبط به الأحداث وتتحرك به أمة ما في فترة ما، لتسير به ومعه نحو تحقيق ذاتها وتأكيد شخصيتها الوطنية المستقلة في صراعها مع التحديثات المفروضة عليها من الداخل والخارج، فإن المقاومة الشعبية المصرة ضد الاحتلال الفرنسي (1798-1801)، وضد الغزو الإنكليزي... آخذة في النمو التدرجي في نضالها ضد قوى الظلم التي فرضت عليها هذا ولقد مرّ نمو الحرة بتلك الفترة في مرحلتين تكمل بعضها بعضاً في أحداثهما وفي منطق النضال الوطني، المرحلة الأولى هي مرحلة المقاومة الشعبية للاحتلال الفرنسي (1798-1810)، المرحلة الثانية مرحلة نمو الزعامات الوطنية في الدن وخاصة القاهرة (1801-1807)، والسؤال الذي يطرح نفسه هو كيف أثرت هاتان المرحلتان في تغيير الحياة السياسية في مصر ودفعها في اتجاه بناء المرتكزات التي أسست عليها الحركة الوطنية "حركتها" المتكاملة في أوائل القرن العشرين؟ الإجابة على هذا السؤال كانت هدف المؤلف في كتابة هذا البحث التحليلي الاستنتاجي للوقائع والأحداث وذلك عن طريق وضع المقاومة المصرية في مكانها الصحيح من حيث الزمان والمكان، دون تحميلها تفسيرات من حاضرنا الراهن، بل تفسيرها بروح العصر الذي ظهرت فيه.
