يسعى الكاتب إلى شرح الوضع القائم في إقليم دارفور السوداني، وإلقاء الضوء على مختلف الجوانب التي أدت إلى الصراع الدامي الحالي الذي يجري فيه، وتحّوله إلى قضية شائكة، انعكست آثارها المدمرة ولا تزال تنعكس، على أرض هذا الأقليم ومواطنيه.
انفجار الوضع في هذا الإقليم، جاء في لحظة تضافر الظروف الموضوعية الخارجية والداخلية مجتمعة. إذ توفرت له المعطيات الإقليمية، كما التغيرات والتوازنات الدولية، إضافة بالطبع إلى الأسباب التاريخية الداخلية التقليدية. فإقليم دارفور عانى خلال عقود من الزمن، من الإهمال المستمر من قبل الحكومات المركزية السودانية، مما أوصله إلى حالة مذرية من التخلف والفقر. لم يقف أبناء الإقليم من النخبة المتعلمة الواعية موقف الصامت، فحاولوا بجميع الوسائل المتاحة لهم، وعبر العديد من المنابر، إسماع صوتهم للسلطات، مطالبين بالحصول على الخدمات الأساسية، وبضرورة التنمية، فلم يحصلوا على الإستجابة الكافية ولا على الإهتمام اللازمين. يركّز الكتاب على ضرورة فهم هذا الجانب التاريخي من القضية السودانية، فيفسر طبيعة المجتمع السوداني، ويشرح تركيبته الداخلية وميزان القوى الذي يتحكم بها. كما يحدد دور النخبة السياسية فيه، والتي أسهمت في تعقيد المشكلات الموروثة، وفي تعميق الأزمات التي أدت إلى انفجار الوضع، لتكشف عجز الدولة وهشاشتها، وتهدد استقرارها وتماسكها ووجودها.
يهدف الكتاب إذا، إلى تلمس جوهر الأزمة، وشرح أبعادها المتكاملة، والغوص في أسبابها الحقيقية بغية الوصول إلى الحل الجذري الملائم في إقليم دارفور. وذلك، تزامنا مع قرار المحكمة الدولية الجنائية إصدار مذكرة توقيف بحق الرئيس السوداني البشير، والذي أيدته حركة العدل والمساواة وأبدت استعدادها مد يد المساعدة من أجل تنفيذه، فيما كانت المظاهرات تعّم الخرطوم منددة به.
