يرى المؤلِّف أن مشكلة جنوب السودان قد تفاقمت، ضمن عوامل متعددة، بسبب عجز النخبة السودانية عن تحقيق الانسجام بين مكوّنات المجتمع السوداني، وأنه لأسباب تاريخية وعوامل موضوعية ظهرت أزمة ثقة بين الطرفين، على مستوى النخبة السياسية.
ويلاحظ المؤلِّف أن جوهر الصراع بين الشمال والجنوب، في السودان، هو صراع هويات. ولذلك يقدم إطاراً نظرياً لمفهوم الهوية والظاهرة الإثنية والمضامين السياسية للإثنية، وتأثيرات ذلك في العلاقات الجنوبية الشمالية.
وهو يعالج في كتابه هذا مهدِّدات الوحدة السودانية، من خلال رصد استقرائي لأحداث ومقولات تعبّر عن الصورة الذهنية التي يحملها الجنوبي عن الشمال والشمالي. ويقدِّم أمثلة كثيرة في هذا السياق تعزّز أطروحته التي تستند إلى غياب الاندماج الاجتماعي والتفاعل الثقافي بين الشماليين والجنوبيين.
كما قام بتقييم ما انعقد في هذا الخصوص من اتفاقيات السلام، ولا سيما اتفاقية نيفاشا (2005)، فهي – برأيه – أوقفت الحرب، لكنها لم تحقق السلام، عدا أنها فجّرت صراع هويات.
أهمية هذا الكتاب أنه يأتي في وقت تمرّ فيه علاقة الجنوب والشمال في السودان بمنعطف خطير، وفق ما جاءت به اتفاقية نيفاشا للسلام الشامل التي أعطت حق تقرير المصير لشعب الجنوب بعد فترة انتقالية مدتها ست سنوات (2005-2011). هذا يعني أن الاتفاقية تشكل نقطة تحوّل في تاريخ السودان، مما يستدعي ضرورة البحث في مجمل المتغيرات ومآلاتها.
لذلك تقوم هذه الدراسة على فرضية أساسية ترى أنه من الصعب تحقيق وحدة مستدامة بين الشمال والجنوب ما لم يتم ذلك وفق منظور سوسيولوجي شامل واندماج اجتماعي حقيقي يمهد لانصهار بين القوميات في هوية سودانية كبرى واحدة، تتعايش في داخلها عناصر التنوع الثقافي في انسجام تلقائي.
