حينما ظهر مفهوم ما بعد الحداثة في بداية الأمر، لم يكن ليحيل على فلسفة، ولا ليعبر عن وعي بتحولات، وإنما ليصف "إنتفاضة" فنية تمثلت "في معمار فانتيري وجونسون، وموسيقى كايج وفن ورهول ورستشبرج، وروايات بنشن وبالارد، وأفلام مثل (المخمل الأزرق) و(ميتركس).
لكن هذه "الإنتفاضة" سرعان ما أخذت تبحث عما يمكن ان يكون شكلها الواعي، ليوحدها نظرياً، ويؤسسها فلسفياً، وقد استطاعت أن تجد في فلسفة كل من نيتشه وهيدجر ما يمكن ان يكون تأصيلاً لحركتها، إلا أن منظري ما بعد الحداثة، على إختلاف مشاربهم، ظلوا متمسكين بالتمييز بين صيغتين متباينتين لما بعد الحداثة: صيغة وصفوها بالصيغة "القوية"، اعتبروا أنها تمثلت في القراءة ما بعد البنيوية لنيتشه، وصيغة نعتت بــ"الرخوة"، اعتبروا أنها انحدرت من القراءة التأويلية لهيدجر.
تحاول هذه الدراسة أن تعرض لأهم الأسس الفكرية التي أنبنى عليها المشروع الغربي ما بعد الحداثي، فترصد الظروف التي أدت إلى ظهور نمط فكري جديد أطلق عليه "ما بعد الحداثة"، كما تحاول الدراسة تتبع تجليات ومظاهر الفكر ما بعد الحداثي في الفنون المختلفة، ثم تناقش الدراسة أهم أفكار فلاسفة ما بعد الحداثة وعلى رأسهم فلاسفة التيار الفرنسي جيل دولوز، ميشال فوكو، جان بودريار.
