أثارت مصطلحات: "الحداثة"، و"ما بعد الحداثة"، و"التنوير"، و"نقد التنوير" جدلاً واسعاً في الأوساط الثقافية الغربية في السنوات الأخيرة، أهم ما جاءت به الحداثة هو مبدأ العقلانية، وتقترن "ما بعد الحداثة" بفلسفة الفوضى والعدمية والتفكيك والللانظام.. إلخ، وتنكر قضية التنوير وتنبذ أسس الحداثة، ويرتبط التنوير باخضاع جميع المسلمات والأفكار السابقة لنقد العقل حيث يقوم على مبدأ "كن شجاعاً واستخدم عقلك بنفسك".
اتسم عصر التنوير بشيوع الدعوة إلى استعمال العقل والانطلاق منه لمحاكمة الأوضاع القائمة على جميع الأصعدة الفكرية، والثورة على كل ما هو تقليدي، أما "الحركة المضادة للتنوير" تطالب بالعودة إلى العادات والتقاليد القديمة في عصور الأديان، والتخلي عن العقل من أجل الإيمان. وتدافع عن التعددية الثقافية وتنوع الحضارات، ونحن نطالب بالتفاعل مع "ما بعد الحداثة" وتوظيفها لصالح ثقافتنا، وبلورة مشروع حداثي عربي يواكب التنوير والتطورات العلمية والفكرية في الثقافة الغربية، ويقوم على التمسك بالقيم الدينية الإسلامية، وعدم قبول ما يعرف في الغرب بـ "أنسنة الدين".
