تعد النظرية النسبية هي أكثر الموضوعات العلمية تعرضاً للمسخ والتشويه, ربما لبعدها الواضح عن المألوف وسعة وعمق الخيال العلمي الذي تنطوي عليه وتتشكل بموجبه. فليست ثمة كتب علمية حقيقية باللغة العربية تعنى بهذه النظرية المهمة وتفصّل منطقها بدقة وعمق للقارىء غير المتخصص. حتى القلة القليلة الجيدة في هذا المضمار لاتتخطى التقريب إذ تكتفي بإيراد النتائج دون ذكر الأسباب فلاتلبث هذه المضامين أن تذوي بكر الأيام نتيجة بعدها وتناقضها الظاهري مع المفاهيم الملموسة في الحياة المعاشة, وتنبع أهمية هذا الكتاب من تناوله النظرية النسبية بدقة علمية تجردها من هذه الهالة السحرية التي أحيطت بها من جراء بعدها عن المألوف. وتنقل للمثقف العربي على جميع المستويات الأسباب التي أدت الى نشوء هذه النظرية, وتعزز فيه احترام المنهج العلمي الذي استغرق استخلاصه دهوراً طويلة من كفاح الإنسان لفهم المحيط. وكيف أن النسبية التي تقدم لنا حالياً أفضل تصور متوفر عن العالم الفيزيائي قد أتت تتويجاً لهذه الجهود. إن النسبية وجذورها للعالم الفيزيائي بانيش هوفمان يهدف الى إفهام القارىء منطق النسبية ومصطلحاتها فيجعلها وكأنها تتويج لرحلة يحمل الكاتب بها القارىء بدءاً بالحضارة الإغريقية فيجرد منطق العلم من ميتافيزيقيته ويوسع رقعة المألوف العلمي للقارىء كي تشمل نطاق النظرية النسبية بطريقة لا يحتاج فيها المهتم سوى الى معرفة العمليات الحسابية الأربع فيتيح للقارىء مقارنة المعنى الفيزيائي النسبي للقانون الرياضي بنظيره لغاليلي النيوتوني. ومن أهم ما تحدث فيه الكتاب: الدرب الى نيوتن, نسبية نيوتن, التمهيد البصري للنسبية, النظرية النسبية الخاصة, النظرية النسبية العامة.
