يعتبر هذا الكتاب محاولة موفقة، لعرض مبادئ نظرية النسبية الخاصة التي وضعها ألبرت أينشتاين. ولقد أوضح مؤلف الكتاب، أن المفاهيم التي تعتبر راسخة، كالزمن والفراغ والكتلة، هي في الواقع متغيرة الخواص. فالزمن، مثلاً في صاروخ كوني، يمضي أبطأ من مضيه على الأرض، نفي الوقت الذي تمر فيه على الأرض مئات السنين، لا يمر على الصاروخ سوى بضع سنوات فقط. ويمتاز هذا الكتاب، وعند عرضه لنظرية النسبية، يخلو من التعقيد وببساطة العرض وبعده عن التجريد، مما يجعله في متناول فهم القارئ العادي غير المتخصص. وتجدر الإشارة بأن مؤلفي هذا الكتاب هما عضو أكاديمية العلوم، الدكتور لانداو وأستاذ الفيزياء الدكتور يدوي رومر. وللدكتور لانداو العديد من الإيمان في شتى فروع الفيزياء النظرية مما أهله للحصول على جائزتي نوبل ولينين في العلوم. كما حصل على جائزة الدولة في الفيزياء. ولقد اشتهر الدكتور رومر بمائة في مجالي الفيزياء والإشعاعية والأشعة الكونية.
