يتناول هذا الكتاب، بأسلوب علمي مبسط، أحد الإنجازات الثورية المهمة في تاريخ العلم، ألا وهي نظرية النسبية لأينشتاين. وهي النظرية التي أعادت النظر في مفاهيم فيزيائية مركزية، مثل المكان والزمان والحركة والسرعة والطاقة والمادة، حيث تم بشكل مثير، الجمع بين المكان والزمان من جهة وبين الكتلة والطاقة من جهة أخرى. وهو ما عبر عنه أينشتاين نفسه بصيغة عميقة جاء فيها ما يلي: « من قبل كان الاعتقاد السائد هو أن كل الأشياء الطبيعية إذا ما اختفت من الكون، فإن المكان والزمان سيبقيان.
ومع النسبية، فإنهما سيختفيان بالتزامن مع اختفاء المادة».
