الفكرة المركزية لهذا البحث هي التالية: مع أن العلم واحد كما يقال، فإن النظرات إليه متعددة ومتباينة، وهذا معناه أننا لا نعرف الحاكم في ذاته، وهذا القول يلتقي مع فكرة الفيلسوف كانط الذي رأى كأننا لا نعرف الأشياء في ذاتها. لكنه يختلف عن نظرية كانط في المعرفة لأنها عنده ذات نظام، وهو النظام الذي تفرضه مقولات العقل (مثل السببية) ومبدء المكان والزمان على المعطيات الحسية العشوائية.
