في مجموعته القصصية (السقف) يوظف رياض بيدس استعارات لغوية لا حصر لها، بقصد إيصال المقاصد الروائية، مما يؤسس صوراً ومشاهد ومواقف سردية متنوعة، يستنطق الروائي بها الجمادات، مختارة نشهد (حديث المقاعد المتعبة)، وتارة أخرى نشهد حديث الـ (شقق شاغرة الكلام) فيجعلهم يتحاور مثل الآدميين نافخاً فيهم الروح، كي يعبَروا عن أشد عذابات الإنسان في هذا العصر وهمومه وقلقه. نستمع إلى حديث (الشقة الثانية عشرة): "صامتون جداً، كئيبون، يتكلمون فقط عند الضرورة، لا مرح عندهم ولا ضحك، بسببهم اصبت بجفاف في كل حيطاني، ليتهم يرحلون، ولولا صوت التلفاز لانهرت من الملل والجفاف. هل يوجد بشر كثيرون على شاكلتهم؟ انهم محنطون". وبهذا تعبر كل شقة من الشقق الثلاثة والعشرون عن حالة أصحابها، فمنهم الصامتون، ومنهم التافهون، ومنهم الفرحون، وهكذا...
يضم الكتاب اثنتي عشرة قصة قصيرة نذكر من عناوينها: "العيَ"، "حب الوطن أو ثلاث وجبات يومياً"، "شقق شاغرة للكلام"، "حديث المقاعد المتعبة"... الخ.
