العلاقة بين فلسطين، من جهة، والتاريخ وكتابته، من جهة أخرى، هي علاقة خاصة بل فريدة، نجمت، في الأساس، عن كون الصهيونية مشروعاً سياسياً جعل من التراث اليهودي، الواقعي، والأسطوري، أداة لإستيلاء أمة وإقامة دولة.
ويضم هذا الكتاب أبحاثاً كان الكاتب قد أعدها خلال السنوات الماضية عن كتابة تاريخ فلسطين، وذلك بالرجوع إلى مساهمات عدد من الباحثين الفلسطينيين والعرب، المختصين في حقولهم، الذين قاربوا هذا التاريخ في حقبه المختلفة: القديم، والإسلامي، والعثماني، والمعاصر.
وقد زاوج في إعداد هذه الأبحاث بين المنهجين الوصفي والتحليلي، وركّز فيها، بوجه خاص، على الإشكاليات التي واجهها هؤلاء الباحثون، وعلى المصادر والمراجع التي استندوا إليها.
وقد عمد الكتاب إلى دراسة حالة البحث في حقل تاريخ فلسطين المعاصر وتطوره، بإعتباره الحقل الذي ظهر أولاً ضمن حقول الكتابة التاريخية العربية عن فلسطين، وشغل إهتمام المؤرخين الأوائل منذ عهد الإنتداب البريطاني على فلسطين، ثم انتقل إلى دراسة حالة البحث في حقول التاريخ الفلسطيني الأخرى: القديم، والإسلامي، والعثماني.
