في فاتحة مقدمته التي وضعها لمؤلفه "المكتبة التاريخية"، يشير ديودوروس الصقلي إلى الأهمية الفائقة التي تتميز بها المؤلفات التي تتناول التاريخ العام، ويثني على مصنفيها لأنهم سعوا بأعمالهم إلى مد يد العون للجنس البشري.
بمعنى آخر، أن ديودوروس الصقلي يتصور التاريخ العالمي إنطلاقاً من بدهية الفلسفة الرواقية عن العيش المشترك للجماعات البشرية، عن المواطن الكوني، وهو ما يفضي بنا إلى فكرة وحدة إرتقاء المجتمعات البشرية.
يؤكد ديودوروس في مؤلفه هذا على أن تجربة البشرية وخبراتها إنما تتشكل بفضل المؤلفات التاريخية التي تنقل المعارف عن نجاحات الناس وإخفاقاتهم، وعن كل تجربة فردية على حدة، لكن بما أن كل تجربة فردية هي بالنسبة إلى ديودوروس تعكس التواصل بين الفرد والآخر، سواء كان هذا الآخر فرداً أو جماعة، لذلك فإنه لا يرى في تشكل تجربة البشرية مجرد جمع آلي للتجارب الفردية، ففي تصوره أن شمولية التاريخ البشري مشروطة بالإندماج الداخلي لكل تجربة بشرية، كما يرى فيها أيضاً لحظة من لحظات التناغم والتناسق الكوني التي يتجلى فيها فعل العناية الإلهية.
ونحن في دار الفرقد، إيماناً منا بأن مؤلفات التاريخ العام هي معين معارف الناس وموئل تجارب المجتمعات، رغبنا في أن تكون لنا مساهمتنا المتواضعة في هذا الجهد، فأخذنا على عاتقنا مسؤولية تقديم هذا المؤلف التاريخي الفريد إلى القارئ العربي.
