من أغرب التحديدات وأطرفها، أن تكون الحرب "أروع الظاهرات الإجتماعية"، وأن تكون "هي التي ولّدت التاريخ".
فليس واضحاً في العهود الغابرة إلا تاريخ المعارك.

من هنا، ما حاول أن يبرزه العالم الإجتماعي البارز غاستون بوتول، في هذا الكتاب الأكاديمي الرصين، من سوسيولوجيا الحرب، وتاريخ الحروب، وتحديد ظاهرتها وخصائصها الأتنولوجية وخطوطها النفسية ومميزاتها المعاشية، ومظاهر السكان في أثنائها.
وإذا كان أصل الدول، هو إجتماع الجماعات الظافرة بالجماعات المستعبدة، فلا بدّ إذن من الحروب، أبداً، ليبقى الظافر، فتكون الدول، عندها، بنات الحرب.
هل مستغرب، بعد، أن تكون الحروب "هي التي تولّد التاريخ"؟.
