اعتبر رحيل الشاعر العراقي الكبير عبد الوهّاب البيّاتي في العام /1999م/ ختاماً لرحيل آخر أضلاع المربع الذهبي لزيادة الشعر العربي الحديث، بدر شاكر السياب، بلند الحيدري، نازك الملائكة.
وفي الواقع إن الريادة لا ترتبط بواحد من هؤلاء الشعراء فقط: لأن هناك شعراء في مصر، وسورية، وفلسطين كان لهم أيضاً، شرف الريادة من خلال نماذج شعرية مبكرة قدّموها في الأربعينيات، دون أن تسترعي الإنتباه، بسبب ضعف التواصل الثقافي وتبادل المطبوعات بين الدول العربية حينها.
يمتزج شعر عبد الوهّاب البيّاني بصورة عامة بالأسطورة وإستنطاق التراث العربي الإسلامي شعرياً وموسيقياً، وبالأسئلة الفلسفية الكونية الكبرى، وبالإشرافات الروحية الصوفية المعمقة، فنجد في شعره جلال الدين الرومي ومحي الدين ابن عربي، ومع ذلك لا ينفصل الشاعر عن هموم شعبه وأمته فربط القضية العربية بالقضايا الإنسانية الكبرى من نضال في سبيل الحرية والكرامة البشرية.
البياتي شاعر كبير تنقل بين بغداد ودمشق والقاهرة وموسكو ومدريد وغيرها العشرات من المدن والبلدان، كما لو أنه في رحلة دائمة للبحث عن شعلة الشعر، ومن هنا كان شعره غنياً ويكاد يكون من أهم ما كتب من شعر باللغة العربية في القرن العشرين.
يضم الكتاب بالإضافة إلى سيرة الشاعر، عدداً من اللقاءات المهمة معه، ونقداً أدبياً لتجربته، ومجموعة مختارة من أجمل أعماله الشعرية والنثرية.
