الهدف من هذا الكتاب "مقتل الحسين" هو إزاحة الستار عما خفي واستتر من واقعة كربلاء، ونسف كل ما لا يتفق مع أساس نهضة سيد الشهداء في صراعه الدامي للإحاطة بمن أمات السنة وأحيا البدعة. وقد تمّ للمؤلف ذلك عبر انتقاءه للصحيح والثابت من الروايات وتسجيلها في كتابه هذا؛ وكذلك إشارته إلى الكثير من المنقولات التي لا تنهض على أساس، وإبطاله للعديد من الأقاويل التي راحت تتناقلها الأفواه أزماناً وأزمان. هذا واحتوى كتاب المقتل في هوامشه على بحوث فقهية ولغوية وأدبية وتحقيقات عديدة لكثير من ألفاظ روايات تتضارب على السنة رواتها ويجد القارئ فيه فيضاً من المصادر التي يستند إليها (المترجم له) في تحقيقاتها ودراساته لرواية كربلاء.
