تألف الكتاب الذي يقع في (391) صفحة، وعدد (4) ابواب: الباب الأول كان اطلالة على الاسم والنسب الشريف للامام الحسين (عليه السلام)، والباب الثاني تناول حال الامام قبيل اعلان ثورته المباركة، الباب الثالث تطرق الى بداية الثورة من خروجه حتى استشهاده، اما الباب الرابع والأخير انفرد بمجريات الاحداث بعد استشهاده متناولاً ايضاً خطب الامام زين العابدين والسيدة زينب (عليهما السلام). ويهدف الكتاب الى جمع قصة المقتل الحسيني من كتب العامة قبل الخاصة، وفك التضارب في التفاصيل من خلال الرجوع الى كتب المقتل الأخرى، فضلاً عن اظهار التفاصيل التاريخية بأستخدام أدوات المؤرخ في التحليل والاستنتاج والنقد والمقارنة بين الحوادث والتعليق عليها.
