معلوم أن النص المسرحي قد تمت مقاربته بمجموعة من المناهج النقدية المستوردة، لكن علاقة المسرح بالمنهج النفسي كانت باهتة إذا أخذنا بعين الإعتبار علاقته بباقي الأجناس الأدبية الأخرى: كالرواية والشعر والقصة... والتي استوفت حقها من الدراسة على ضوء هذا المنهج.
حاول الكتاب البحث عن العلاقة القائمة بين التحليل النفسي والأدب، فهذا المنهج أصبح أحد ركائز الفكر الحديث، ومعظم العلوم المعاصرة تتأثر بمفاهيمه ونظرياته، إذ لم يعد من الممكن تجاهل إسهامات العديد من رواده، ولذلك ضمناه محوراً رصدنا فيه الجماليات النفسية، حيث بدأ بنظرية فرويد وإسهاماته.
بعد ذلك انتقل إلى نظرية كارل كوستاف يونغ على أساس أنه تلميذ لفرويد، ومن ثم عرج على نظرية إدلر، الذي تحدث عن مفهوم التعويض، ثم تناول بعد ذلك النظرية اللاكانية، حيث اهتم لاكان بدراسة العلاقات القائمة بين الرغبة والعناصر المادية للغة، ليختم المحور بنظرية شارل مورون، الذي اهتم بالبحث عن البنيات المجازية ذات العلاقة مع التوهمات وكذا تقاطعات النصوص فيما بينها.
أما بالنسبة لعلاقة التحليل النفسي بالتجارب المسرحية، فقد حاول الكتاب أن ينتقي التجارب الأكثر وضوحاً، فبدأ بمسرح العبث كمجال خصب لتجليات التحليل النفسي، ثم توقف بعد ذلك عند مسرح ستالينسلافسكي الذي بالرغم من كونه مسرحاً موجهاً للعرض.
لذلك، جاء هذا الكتاب إجابة لتساؤلات عدة طرحناها ويمكن بلورتها في هذا السياق: "إلى أي مدى يمكن تطبيق منهج التحليل النفسي على الإبداع العربي؟"، "كيف يمكن مقاربة النصوص - النماذج - بآليات هذا المنهج من غير تعسف عليها وعلى المنهج؟"، "هل تعتبر جميع مقولات التحليل صالحة للتطبيق على النصوص العربية؟".
