يعالج هذا الكتاب جماليات اللغة في السرد وفق منهج علمي، فيعري المفاهيم النقدية الخاطئة التي وقع فيها كوكبة من المشتغلين بالنقد الأدبي، ويبز الضرورة إلى تحري الدقة في استثمار المصطلحات الغربية في هذا المجال باستيعاب تاريخها وفلسفتها. وقد استطاعت المؤلفة أن تنفذ إلى الجذور التاريخية والفلسفية والاجتماعية لمصطلح تيار الوعي، وكشفت عن مصادره ومبررات ظهوره على المستويين النظري والتطبيقي، وعن صلته الوطيدة بالعلوم الإنسانية الأخرى، وربطته عبر مداخل حضارية إنسانية، تتوسل بفلسفة التاريخ والاجتماع وعلم النفس بالتيار الكلي الشامل الذي اجتاح العالم منذ بدايات القرن العشرين، فالتمست الوشائح التي تصل بين انهيار الأشكال الأدبية التقليدية في الأدب بعامة، وفي السرد بخاصة، وذلك بما أسمته بـ(القلق التجريبي).
ثم تقدمت لتقارب صلب موضوعها الرئيسي (القصة القصيرة السعودية)، فرصدت-بحس نقدي رهيف-مراحل استثمار هذه التقنية، فبينت الفروق بين التقنيات الاستبطانية التقليدية كالتحليل الداخلي والمناجاة وما إلى ذلك، وبين أساليب تيار الوعي وأدواته، غير غافلة عن استكشاف السياق التطوري الذي أفضى بالتجارب المبكرة في ميدان القصة القصيرة المحلية إلى استخدام الواعي لهذه التقنية، وربطت بين ها السياق وبين حراك الواقع المحلي وتجلياته المتمثلة في إشكالية العلاقة بين ما هو اجتماعي وإنساني وميتافيزيقي، حيث انتهى بها المطاف إلى بلورة جملة من القضايا التي شكلت وعي كتاب القصة القصيرة في المملكة العربية السعودية، وأسهمت في صياغة رؤاهم.
