مقدمة ابن خلدون معلمة ثرة بكل طريف, أظهرت تفرد مؤلفها, وغناء علومها, وتميزها وهي معين ينهل منه الواردون, ويقيس منه السالكون, منذ تأليفها إلى الآن, فلم تفقد جدتها, رغم تقادم عهدها، وإن أصابها غبار وتراكم, مما دعا العلماء للعناية بها, لإزالة الشوائب التي حجبت محاسنها, ومنعت من فهم مقاصدها. ولكل نسخة سبقت هذه خصال تختلف عن مثيلاتها, وإن كانت هذه قد جمعت فضائل السابقين, وأضافت ما أمكن مما ستجده مسطراً. وقد نص ابن خلدون في بحثه عن مقاصد التأليف, فذكر منها أموراً مستجدة لم يتعرض لها, وأوضح مشكلات عرضت, وشرح مشكلات استغلقت, وكشف عوار قضايا لم يتنبه لها, كما نظم مداخل لكل الفصول تعين على فهم المراد وتساعد على استجماع الموضوعات, كما ربط بالإشارات والإحالات المفرق والموزع في الفصول المتباعدة. لتحقيق المقاصد المبتغاة من ذلك.
وما يميز هذه الطبعة من المقدمة أنها قد جاءت محققة حيث اعتنى المحقق بما يلي: أولاً: المقابلة على المخطوطات المتوفرة في مكتبة الأسد بدمشق. وكانت العناية بالنسخة الكاملة الموسومة بالظاهري، وهي المهداة للملك الظاهر برقوق عام 797هـ، وعنها أخذت هذه النسخة. والنسخة الثانية كتبت سنة 1012هـ، وهي مشوشة الأوراق، وقد تناوب في كتابتها اثنان. ثانياً: إثبات فوارق النسخ المطبوعة. ثالثاً: ضبط المشكل، رابعاً: شرح الغريب من: الألفاظ، الأماكن، الأعلام، خامساً: المطابقة بين المقبوسات ما أمكن، ودراسة المقدمة والتاريخ ومحاولة تعليل بعض الظواهر المشكلة في حياة المؤلف، سادساً: إثبات عدد من الفهارس المتنوعة للتمكين من الاستفادة من الكتاب والتنبيه على بعض ما وقع فيه الأفاضل في طبعاتهم.
