اعتنى النقاد بتجديد معنى النسبية وبتوضيح آلياتها معتمدين في ذلك بصفة عامة على المنهج التحليلي التاريخي: إمّا من الخارج بضبط موقع هذا الإبداع الثوري في تاريخ العلم الفيزيائي مثل ما فعل كل من غود سميث، وآرتور ماخ، وأومناز، أو من الداخل بتتبع ميلاد هذا العلم ونشأته عند صاحبه، ويمكن أن يذكر على هذا المستوى مثلاً جاك مرلوبونتي.
والمؤلف من خلال بحثه الذي هو بين يدي القارئ يصبو إلى التعريف بمضمون هذه الثورة العلمية. وهو يستعمل لهذا الغرض منهجاً استنباطياً استكشافياً يقول أينشتاين أنه استند إليه. وهذا التمشي لن يمنع الباحث من القيام بملاحظات تاريخية حسب ما يقتضيه المقام. وسيرتكز البحث أساساً على المؤلفات التأليفية الأخيرة حيث كان في الإمكان الوصول إلى رؤية نهائية وموضوعية. هذا وقد استغل النقاد، من ناحية أخرى، بداية الفيزياء المعاصرة فلسفياً. وباستثناء التأويلات العامة جداً التي يصبح معها المتن العلمي مجرّد تعلّة للانطلاق في التأمل غير عابئة بدقته وصرامته، هذا وإن الدراسات الجدية والدقيقة كثيرة في هذا المجال منها على سبيل المثال الكتابات الباشلاردية ومؤلف ميشال باتي الأخير وغيرها. وبالإضافة إلى ما سبق فإن الباحث سيتناول أيضاً نسبية أينشتاين من الناحية الفلسفية، فيبحث في المسألة من زاوية التاريخ الفلسفي للعلم. وهو يقصد بهذا الانطلاق من الوصول لعقلية المسار العلمي. محاولاً في هذا الصدد تفسير كيفية تصرف أينشتاين في قانوني العطالة (أو القصور الذاتي) والجاذبية الكلاسيكيين. بالإضافة إلى ذلك سيقدم الباحث بضبط نظرية المعرفة الملائمة للنسبية من وجهة نظره. هذا وإن كان المبحث الأول غير معتاد فإن الدراسة الثانية قد شغلت الناس؛ ومع ذلك فإن الباحث يسعى في بحثه هذا إلى إفادة الدراستين معاً. وعموماً فإن هذا الكتاب يتعلق بالمعنى العلمي للنسبية وبعدها الفلسفي، وذلك من خلال تعريف نسبية أينشتاين (بشوطيها)، بطريقة تتلاءم فيما يرى الباحث مع العقلية الفلسفية.
