العقل سمة من سمات العلم الأكيدة، والمعارف التي لا تقوم على العقل، تُخرج عادةً من المجال العلمي، ولكن إرتباط العلم بالعقل لم يمنع من الجزم بأن مرتكزات العلم تبقى مع ذلك ميتافيزيقية... وأن العلم وإنْ كان يغيّر بإطراد أُسسه الميتافيزيقية بإتجاه العقلانية، إلا أنه غير قادر على القطيعة نهائياً مع الميتافيزيقيا...
وهكذا، من المعرفة الميتافيزيقية إلى العقلانية العلمية، سيرورة حديثة قطعها العقل العلمي عبر العصور، لكن العلوم لم تشهد إزدهاراً هائلاً كما ازدهرت في القرن الثامن عشر، عصر العقل أو عصر التنوير كما أصطُلح على تسميته، إذ شهد ذلك العصر نهوضاً كبيراً لعلوم بعينها، مثل الميكانيكا والفيزياء الكونية والرياضيات... إلخ، يُمكن رصد عمل العقل في أجلى صوره.
