راج الحديث عن حياد العلم وعدم انحيازه وكأنه يستهدف حقائق مطلقة مجردة ثابتة، وكأن العلم لا وطن له، وذهب أصحاب هذا الرأي إلى حد القول بأن الحقيقة العلمية تفرض نفسها على العقل في أي مكان أو زمان، بقوة البرهان والمنطق وحدها، أي أن هذه الحقيقة بطبيعتها عالمية، ولا مجال للتفرقة القائمة على أسس قومية. فأصحاب الاتجاه الوضعي- مثلًا- يرون أنه لا بد للحقيقة العلمية أن تجيء مستقلة- بقدر المستطاع- عن قائلها، فلا يمازجها شيء من ميوله وأهوائه ونزعاته الذاتية وقيمه التي يقوم بها الأشياء من حيث خيرها أو شرها، وجمالها أو قبحها؛ وأن الوصول إلى الحقيقة العلمية هو غاية البحث العلمي، وأن الحقيقة العلمية قوامها "الموضوعية". والمقصود بالموضوعية التعامل مع موضوع البحث كما هو، أي في استقلال عن آرائنا وعواطفنا.
على الجانب الآخر يذهب بعض الباحثين إلى حد القول بـ"خرافة" الموضوعية، وبأن هذا الانضباط المنهجي الصارم، وتلك الشخصية العلمية المتجردة هما مجرد "نماذج مثالية" لا توجد إلا في كتب مناهج البحث فقط، إذ يتعذر وجودها في واقع الممارسات الفعلية للبحث العلمي. فالباحث مهما زعم بأنه محايد وموضوعي لا يمكن أن ينكر أنه كإنسان مفكر يملك عالمًا خاصًا من المعاني والرموز، أو يملك نسقًا خاصًا ينشئ داخله حقيقته الخاصة التي تتضمن وتستند إلى تحيزاته الفكرية والشخصية المميزة، والتي تجعله يرى العالم الخارجي بعيون غير محايدة أو بعيون مصبوغة بتلك التحيزات الخاصة. فالباحث لا يستطيع أن يزعم أنه يستقبل الواقع على شاشة بيضاء نقية من أية أفكار أو معتقدات مسبقة.
إن أهمية هذا الكتاب- الذي بين يدي القارئ- إنما تكمن في أنه أول كتاب بالعربية يعالج هذا الموضوع الذي يدور حول ما إذا كانت قضايا العلم نسبية أم مطلقة، وما إذا كانت أحكامه وقوانينه موضوعية أم مصبوغة بتحيزات خاصة وأيديولوجيات معينة.
