الكتاب هو محاولة على طريق تأسيس مفهوم معاصر لقراءة النص الأدبي، حيث يتناول المؤلف، وبقراءة نقدية حديثة، نماذج مختارة من الشعر العربي القديم. وقد توزع الكتاب ضمن فصول ثلاث، فقد ضم الفصل الأول قراءة نقدية قديمة لنصوص شعرية مختارة، فيقرأها المؤلف من حيث أصولها النظرية وتطبيقاتها العملية ويأتي الفصل الثاني ليعاين قراءات نقدية حديثة لنص شعري قديم هو نص لعبيد بن ربيعة العامري، معاينة من زاويتين: المنهج والمصطلح. وأما الفصل الثالث فيقرأ نصاً شعرياً حديثاً هو (أنشودة المطر) للسياب، ويعالجه في قراءاته النقدية المعاصرة: مبادئها وأوساطها وخواتيمها.
