يحاول هذا البحث دراسة التفكير النقدى فى شروح ديوان المتنبي ويختار لدراسته القرنين الرابع والخامس الهجريين وقت نشاط الحركة النقدية حول المتنبى، وتحقق الابتكار فى أكثر الشروح، وقد بدأت فى منتصف القرن الخامس الهجرى حركة الجمع، والاختيار، وتلخيص الآراء، بعد أن تراكمت آراء الشراح ، وأصبح من الصعب- فى ضوء ظروف ثقافية خاص ومعتقدات فنية معينة- الوصول إلى تفسيرات جديدة لشعر المتنبي.
ونقصد بالتفكير النقدي ما يبدأ منذ اللحظة الأولى لمقاربة المتلقى للعمل الأدبي، وتعرضه المباشر لتأثيره. وبناء على هذا يتحدد البحث فى قسمين، يعنى الأول بدراسة قضية التفسير وقراءة انص الشعرى فى الرشح ويبدأ بمناقشة إطارها الخارجى ومكوناته ومظاهر تأثيره.
