هذا البحث يقوم على (تساؤل أساسي) هو: هل يمكن أن نجد عند أحد أكبر علماء تفسير الإعجاز القرآني نظرية نقدية تفسير معنى الشعور ودور الناقد وملامح لغة الشعر، وإذا وجدنا مبتغانا فما مدى تفرده عما كان مطروحاً قبله، وما مدى صلته بالقضايا النقدية المطروحة في عصره. أعني القرن الرابع الهجري. وماذا بقى من هذا الطرح في الزمن اللاحق؟ كان هذا هو السؤال الجوهري ولم تكن إجابته ميسورة ولا متاحة إلا بعد أن نحدد المصادر الأساسية التي كتبها الباقلاني الذي لم يكن معروفاً له في أوساط الباحثين إلا كتابه "إعجاز القرآن"، لذا كان لا بد من البحث عن كتب أخرى له نجد فيها ما يصور أفكاره، أو يحدد تصوراته. وهذا ما حدث بالفعل كما سوف نرى على صفحات هذا الكتاب حينما نتحدث عن مصادر الباقلاني.
وكان من الطبيعي- بعد أن توفرت مادة البحث- أن نحدد طريقة المعالجة بما يناسبها ويتلاءم معها ومع قضايا النقد العربي القديم. فكان هذا التقسيم المقترح القائم بين يديك عزيزي القارئ وهو القائم على جزأين: الأول يتناول المصادر وطبيعة منهج المفارقة وأصول هذا المنهج. والثاني جعلناه وقفاً على دراسة ثلاث قضايا ذات صلات قوية بقضايا النقد العربي القديم والبلاغة. هذه القضايا هي الأسلوب والناقد: شخصيته ودوره وأحكامه. والنص: طبيعته وعلاقاته ووظيفته.
وبعد..أشعر أن دوري عند هذه المرحلة من الحديث قد انتهى، وبدأ دورك عزيزي القارئ. فلم يعد عندي ما أقوله لك لأنك أنت القادر على أن تقول ما لم أقله، وما قلته، وما تريد أنت قوله من رأي في هذا العمل.
