ملأت الإبل، في العصر الجاهلي والعصور التي تلت، على العربي حياته، إذ كانت عونه في حله وترحاله، وبالإضافة إلى ذلك فقد كانت الإبل دراهم العرب وأموالهم حتى أنهم سموها المال. وكما ملأت الإبل على العربي حياته، فقد ملأت لغته وأمثاله وأشعاره، وورد ذكرها كثيراً في القرآن الكريم، أما اللغة، فالمفردات والتعابير المتعلقة بالإبل وشؤونها تشكل قسماً كبيراً من مفردات اللغة وتعابيرها.
ورغم أهمية الإبل قديماً وحديثاً، فإن الدراسات بشأنها قليلة، أما الكتب التي تعالج شؤونها فنادرة، وعليه كان هذا الكتاب ليسد ثغرة في بناء التصانيف العربية، ولخدمة التراث العربي والأصالة العربية بتوجيه الأنظار إلى هذا الحيوان المهم في حياة العربي، ولغته وتاريخه، وأمثاله وشعره وغذائه، خاصة أن الدول العربية تحتل المرتبة الأولى في العالم من حيث عدد الإبل فيها.
وقد قسم الكتاب إلى أربعة عشر فصلاً تناول الأول منه الموطن الأصلي للإبل، والثاني تحدث عن أنواع الإبل وسلالاتها، وفي الثالث مكانة الإبل عند العرب، والرابع الإبل في اللغة، والخامس الإبل في الدين، والسادس الإبل في الأدب العربي، أما السابع فقد تناول الإبل في المعتقدات والعادات العربية، وتناول الثامن الإبل في الأمثال العربية، ثم تناول في الفصل التاسع صفات أعضاء الجمل المثالية، وفي العاشر ألوان الإبل، والحادي عشر طباع الإبل وخصائصها، والفصل الثاني عشر تحدث عن منافعها، أما الفصل الثالث عشر فقد تحدث عن تكاثرها، أما الفصل الرابع عشر فقد تضمن سباقات الإبل في أبو ظبي، والخامس عشر تناول تغذيتها والعناية بها، والسادس عشر أقوال في الإبل، وأما الفصل السابع عشر والأخير فقد تحدث عن حرب البسوس.
