إن لاسم الفرد منا أثراً في شخصيته، ذلك أن هذا الاسم يشكّل أول ارتباط بين الفرد والمجتمع. وقد استقى العرب أسماءهم من مصادر مختلفة تعود، في معظمها، إلى مسائل عدّة، 1-الدين: للدين أعمق الجذور في النفس الإنسانية، وبخاصة في ظاهرة التسمية، والكثير من الأسماء العربية لها طابع إسلامي، 2-أسماء الحيوانات: فالقبائل العربية التي تسمت بأسماء الحيوان تعدّ بالعشرات، 3-أسماء الطيور، 4-أسماء النباتات، 5-أسماء جمادات، 6-أسماء مهن، 7-أسماء زمان، 8-صفات.
والباحث في الأسماء العربية يرى أن هناك دوافع وراء معظم هذه الأسماء، وأن هذه الدوافع تختلف من عصر إلى آخر، ومن قبيلة إلى أخرى. وفي هذا الكتاب جمع المؤلف مجموعة كبيرة من الأسماء اختارها من ضمن الآلاف ما رآه الأليق والأفضل، ويرى أن عمله هذا هو محاولة مخلصة لعرض الأسماء العربية أمام القرّاء، فيختارون منها ما يناسبهم لأطفالهم.
