يبحث هذا الكتاب في التشكلات المبكرة للفكر الإسلامي وكيف تحوّلت إلى أنساق عقلية، إذ من الصعب أيضاً اعتباره مجرد فكر لاهوتي تقتصر حدوده على القضايا الدينية والعقدية فقط. لقد تجاوز علم الكلام حدود اللاهوت بالمعنى التقليدي للكلمة وأراد أن يؤسس بنفسه كفكر يقوم على العقل، على عقل يبرر الوحي ويبقى لصيقاً به إلى حد التلازم معه، فالدفاع عن العقيدة بالأدلة العقلية، كما تم تعريف علم الكلام حدّدَ العقل ابتداءً على أنه قوة تبرير لقضايا الوحي، ولكن هذا التحديد لم يُروض العقل ويُرضخه كلياً بل سرعان ما كان يمارس العقل عقلانيته ويصبح فاعلية مؤثرة لا تقتصر على حدود التبرير فحسب، بل يتجاوز هذه المهمة في كثير من المراحل وعند كثير من الفرق الكلامية، ليصبح قوة صياغة للوحي، تعتمد الوحدي من جهة وتذهب به حيث تقتضي متطلباته كعقل أن يذهب من جهة أخرى. إن هذه التمردات التي حصلت على العقل وبالعقل من كونه قوة تبرير إلى صيرورته قوة صياغة هو ما جعل المتمسّكين بالنص لاحقاً يهاجمون علم الكلام ويعتبرونه مشابهاً للفلسفة ومتورطاً بها.
لقد خضعت العلاقة بين العقل والوحي لترددات كثيرة، بين خضوع العقل كلياً لمسائل الوحي وبين طموحه لأن يعقله. ولم يكن هذا التردد مرتبطاً بالتقدم الزماني فقط، بل وفي لحظات تاريخية محددة نجد العقل يلعب دور المُبرر حيناً ودور الصائغ حيناً آخر. ولكن في كل الحالات فإن عمل العقل داخل النص كان عملاً تأويلياً بامتياز سواء كان العقل يعلن خضوعه وتبعيته للوحي أو كان يعلن قدرته على فهمه فهماً عقلانياً، ففي كلتا الحالتين نحن أمام تأويل معين للوحي يحدد من خلاله العقل مساحة عمله وكيفيتها.
