ماذا دهي البشرية؟ إلى أين تتجه؟ ماذا سيكون مصيرها؟ ألا يشهد تاريخ القرن العشرين بأننا نمر في مرحلة من نصف الجنون الجماعي والفردي؟
هؤلاء المجابين يلعبون بعود الثقاب في بيت مليء بالمواد الملتهبة . وعندما يحاول بعض الذين لم يفقدوا بعد عقلهم أن يقنعوهم بترك عود الثقاب، ويأخذوه منهم مهما كلف الأمر، فإن المجانين يجيبون في صراخ لا تقتربوا وإلا فإننا سنحرق كل شيء.
ألا الانتشار الواسع لعادات التوحش والتدمير والقساوة وجرائم الأحداث، يقود المؤلف إلى المباشرة بتحليل عناصر إحصائية متنوعة، ويحاول الجواب على السؤال المطروح أحياناً:
كيف حصل ذلك، وكيف نتمكن من المقاومة والدفاع؟ لماذا تعمر نفوسنا بالكثير من النيات الحسنة، ولكن لا نرى من أثر ذلك سوى نتائج إيجابية قليلة؟ لماذا يتكلم الناس لغات مختلفة، وبالرغم من استخدامهم للقواميس وتعلمهم للغات الأجنبية فهم لا يتفاهمون فيما بينهم، فالذي يعتبره بعضهم خيراً يراه الآخرون شراً؟ لماذا إذن لا يستطيع الإنسان المفعم بالنيات الممتازة أن يحققها؟ لماذا هذا العجز في الإرادة؟
هل يمكن أن يكون الإنسان-في مجرى التطور الكوني الشامل-يلعب دور كائن فاشل، أو نتاج عديم الفائدة مرشح للزوال؟ ويجب القول أن هذه التصفية تسير بخطى سريعة. ألا يوجد أمل، مهما كان ضعيفاً، لا يقاف اتجاه هذه الصيرورة؟ من القرن العشرين يسمحان بمثل هذا الأمل، وإن مؤلف هذا الكتاب عرفهما ولذا يرى من واجبه أن يخبر عنها القارئ.
