هذا الكتاب هو دراسة لشخصية فذة من شخصيات أمتنا البارزين، إنه الصحابي الجليل عبد الله ابن حواري رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأحد العشرة المبشرين بالجنة: الزبير بن العوام، وأمه أسماء ذات النطاقين، وخالته عائشة أم المؤمنين، وجدته لأبيه صفية بنت عبد المطلب، وعمة أبيه خديجة بنت خويلد-رضي الله عنهم أجمعين.
كان أول مولود ولد في الإسلام بالمدينة، وأول شيء دخل بطنه ريق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. نشأ عند خالته عائشة في بيت النبوة، فأصبح حمام المسجد، وفارس الخلفاء، وأعلم الناس بالمناسك، وأحسن الناس صلاةً. تقياً ورعاً حريصاً على التمسك بالقرآن والسنة، مرجعاً في أصول التشريع.
كان -رضي الله عنه- صنديداً مغواراً لا يشق له غبار، اشتهر بشجاعته منذ صغره. جعله أمير المؤمنين عثمان -رضي الله عنه- آمراً على داره في حصاره. وفي يوم الجمل أبلى بلاءً حسناً ليدفع عن جمل أم المؤمنين عائشة -رضي الله عنها. وكان ممن شارك في التحكيم بين سيدنا علي ومعاوية-رضي الله عنهما. امتنع عهن مبايعة يزيد واعتصم ببيت الله الحرام، وقتل فيه بعد أن بويع للخلافة ودامت خلافته تسع سنوات.
وقد قام المؤلف بإلقاء الضوء على هذه الشخصية، التي عاشت في فترة عصبية مليئة بالفتن، هي نهاية الحكم الراشدي وبداية تأسيس الدولة الأموية، معرفاً بإيجابيات وسلبيات سياسته وسلوكه. وفي أثناء دراسته ربط الأحداث بأسبابها، وقدم بعض التحليلات والتعليلان، وأعطى أحكاماً على بعض ألأحداث بمفاهيم هذا العصر-مما يصعب تصويب حكم بذاته.
ودار القلم إذ تتحف قراءها الكرام بهذا الكتاب من "سلسلة أعلام المسلمين" ترمي إلى التعريف بهذا الصحابي الجليل الذي جمع بين الدنيا والآخرة، وبين العلم والعمل، وبين العبادة والسياسية، ليكون في ذلك قدوة وأسوة حسنة.
