وقد خطر لمؤلف هذا المعجم أن يسد هذا النقص ويلبي حاجة الباحثين والدارسين، خصوصاً وأن الأمر يتعلق بمواضيع تاريخية ومعارك حديث خلال عصور وعهود متباعدة وقد يجد القارئ في ثنايا ما يقرأه إشارات إلى هذه المعركة أو تلك دون أن يعرف تفاصيلها أو وقت حدوثها وأسبابها ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذا المرجع إذ يقدم المؤلف معجماً يتسع لذكر هذه المعارك فيورد زمان ومكان المعركة والأطراف المتنازعة فيها ونتيجتها. كما يقدم شرحاً لبعض المعارك ذات الأهمية التاريخية متبعاً الترتيب الأبجدي، أما في الاسم الواحد فقد راعى التسلسل الزمني، وزود معجمه بفهارس عامة وخرائط وصوراً توضيحية.
