قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: "صنفان لا غنى للناس عنهما؛ الأطباء لأبدانهم والعلماء لأديانهم". وقد صح أنه صلى الله عليه وسلم تداوى وأمر بالتداوي. فنشط ابن الأزرق للعمل على تصنيف هذا الكتاب "تسهيل المنافع في الطب والحكمة" الذي جمع فيه فائدة ما جاء في كتابين هما: "شفاء الأجسام" لمحمد بن أبي المغيث، وكتاب "الرحمة" لمهدي الصبري. وقد عمل ابن الأزرق على جمع مقاصد هذين الكتابين في مصنفه هذا حيث يذكر ويشرح العلل والأمراض ثم يذكر الأدوية المناسبة لها والتي بالإمكان الحصول عليها في ذلك الزمان. فمن أراد أن يقف على دواء علته وعلاجها وجد في هذا الكتاب ما فيه كفاية من الأدوية الكثيرة السهلة النافعة والتي جمعها ابن الأزرق من الكتابين المذكورين ولم يكتف بما جاء فيهما بل كان يردف كل ذلك بزوائد تدعو الحاجة إليها مما عثر عليه في كتب عدة قبل الملقط لابن الجوزي، و"برء الساعة" للإمام الرازي ومجموع السويدي ورسالة هذا الحكيم المارديني وكامل الصناعة الطبية وغيرها من الكتب التي فيها فائدة في الطب. وقد جعل الكتاب ضمن خمسة أقسام 1-في أشياء من علم الطبيعة والأمر بالتداوي 2-في تفسير الحبوب وطبائع الأغذية والأدوية ومنافعها 3-فيما يصلح للبدن في حال الصحة وذكر أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في وصايا وحكم في الطب 4-في علاج العلل الخاصة بكل عضو مخصوصاً بأعضاء الجسد 5-الأمراض العامة المستقلة في البدن وغير ذلك من الرقى والعزائم والمنافع. إلى جانب ذلك فقد حوى الكتاب في هامشه ما جاء في الطب النبوي في هذا المجال من خلال أحاديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وأقواله وأفعاله.
