يتناول هذا الكتاب مباحث متنوعة تتضمن العديد من الدراسات الخاصة بسورية في العصور (الهلنستي والروماني والبيزنطي) ودراسات أخرى تتحدث عن سورية في عهود الآشوريين بين عامي (722- 506)ق.م والكلدانيين بين (605- 538)ق.م.
وفي هذا المجال تطرق المؤلف في حديثه إلى أحياء دمشقية شهيرة كحي الصالحية وعرنوس وسبب إطلاق هذه التسميات عليها كما تناولتها القصص الشعبية والدراسات التاريخية التي تؤكد مثلاً على أن "عرنوس" بطل من ابطال التاريخ والدته سقطت في الأسر أثناء قدوم إحدى الحملات الصليبية إلى دمشق وكانت أبنة أمير طرابلس الإفرنجي، وبعد وقوعها في الأسر التقت بالمقدم "إسماعيل أبي السباع" أمير القلاع آنذاك وأعجبت به وتزوجته وعندما علم والدها الأمير الإفرنجي بهذا الزواج أبدع في حيله وخداعه إلى أن استرجعها بالمكر والخداع وكانت في أثنائها حاملاً، وانجبت وليدها "آرنوس" في إيطاليا وعندما شب آرنوس أصبح محارباً شجاعاً فتم تكليفه على رأس جيش بالسفر إلى بلاد الشام لدعم قوات الفرنجة الصليبين فيها. وحدث أن جرت معركة بين الفرنجة والمسلمين، كان فيها الأب "أبو السباع" أمير القلاع في مواجهة ابنه الشاب "آرنوس" الذي انهزم قليلاً أمامه وقد لفت نظر الأب (عقد مزين بأيقونة كان يضعها في عنقه الفارس الإفرنجي الذي يصارعه) هذه الإيقونة بالذات كانت زوجته تحرص على التبرك بها. وبهذا تمكن الأب من التعرف إلى ابنة آرنوس، فتقدم منه وعانقه، ثم انضم الابن إلى قوات أبيه وحارب الفرنجة مع المسلمين وبعد استشهاد أبيه أمضى آرنوس بقية حياته في دمشق حتة دفن في منطقة عرفت باسمه "عرنوس".
إلى ذلك يتحدث المؤلف أيضاً عن الفنانين والصناع الإغريق والآثار والمباني التي تعود إلى القرون الميلادية الأولى وتأثيرها في فن العمارة... ومواضيع أخرى ذات صلة...
