كان الغربيون الذين يزورون دمشق يقفون مذهولين أمام كميات التوابل والعطورات والحجارة الكريمة التي يشاهدونها. كما أن ثراء التجار يدهشهم بالتنوع اللامتناهي للسلع التي تغص بها الأسواق. لكن ما سيكون سبباً آخر لإثارة دهشة أكبر لديهم هو بلوغ السلع المصنعة محلياً درجة تقرب من الكمال. فكل حرفة في دمشق لها سوق خاصة أو حي خاص بها. وكل عائلة تزاول الحرفة نفسها فتتداولها دوماً أباً عن جد فنشأ عن ذلك الواقع هذا الكمال الملاحظ في اليد العاملة الماهرة والسلع التي تنتجها ورشات هذه المدينة العظيمة.
