شغل العلويون في الإسلام جانبين مميزين كانت لهما نتائج بعيدة المدى في الدولة العربية الإسلامية، وصبغوا مجريات الأحداث بطابعهم الخاص، أعني أثرهم السياسي الخطير في منابذة الدول القائمة آنذاك، وإقامة كيانات وممالك في تحد لتلك الدول وسلاطينها، بل فاقتهم بنظمها ومؤسساتها، إلى جانب أثرهم الفكري وحهودهم العلمية التي أخذت بالإنتشار في بقاع كثيرة من العالم الإسلامي.
وإذا كان ذلك الأثر قد امتد منذ الأيام الأولى لقيام دولة بني أمية سنة 91ه/661م فإنه استمر في أثناء الوضع الجديد الذي صاحب سقوط دولتهم، ووصول العباسيين إلى السلطة سنة 132ه / 749م.
إن الموضوع الذي أعدت له هذه الدراسة يقع في المدة التي امتدت بين نهاية القرن الثاني الهجري وحتى سقوط دولة بني العباس سنة 656ه/1258م ويتناول أوضاع العلويين المختلفة من أحوال إجتماعية إلى إسهامات إدارية، فضلاً عن الجانب السياسي وإسهاماتهم الفكرية.
إن سبب اختياري هذا الموضوع يكمن في أثر أهل البيت (عليهم السلام) وأهميتهم، وإسهاماتهم الخطيرة والكبيرة في أحداث الدولة العربية الإسلامية منذ قيامهم وحتى افول نجمها.
