"أخبار الدولة العباسية" هو عنوان هذا الكتاب الذي عثر على مخطوطه في مكتبة مدرسة أبي حنيفة في الأعظمية في بغداد، وكان دون عنوان، ووضع عنوانه في بادئ الأمر "أخبار العباس وولده"، كما جاء في التعريف وكما أوحت خطة الكتاب للمحقق، وبما أن التعريف المذكر يوحي بأن الكتاب يتناول تاريخ الخلافة العباسية فقد تم اختيار "أخبار الدولة العباسية" عنواناً لهذا المخطوط.
ويقول المحقق بأن كلمة "دولة" تعني "دعوة" أو "دور. وينتسب المؤلف إلى العباسيين بالولاء وهذا مكنه من الإطلاع على أخبار الدعوة العباسية وأسرارها من رجال الدعوة ومن بعض العباسيين، فانفرد بمعلومات ووثائق هامة، وقد كتب الكتاب في أوساط القرن الثالث الهجري، في عصر ظهور المؤرخين الكبار وتوفر روايات" وأخبار تاريخية واسعة، مما مكن المؤلف من التوسع في أخبار الدعوة. ومع أنه كتاب "أخبار" إلا أنه وضع في إطار النسب، واعتنى بالإسناد نتيجة توسع أثر مدرسة الحديث.
وقد اقتصر الكتاب على أخبار الدعوة العباسية. وعرض وجهة العباسيين أثناء الدعوة والفترة العباسية الأولى. وانتهى قبيل قيام الدولة العباسية. ثم إن أسلوب وفترة تأليفه وطبيعة أخباره من جهة، وما لدى المحقق من معلومات عن محمد بن صالح بن مهدان "ابن النطاح" من جهة أخرى، جعلت الباحث يميل إلى القول بأن الكتاب هو من تأليف ابن النطاح.
وقد تمت عملية التحقيق وذلك بضبط نص الكتاب من خلال مخطوط وحيد، وهذا الوضع تتطلب من الباحث الرجوع إلى المصادر الأولية بحثاً عن الروايات والأخبار والأشعار الواردة منها، والتي جاءت في هذا الكتاب لتقويم النص، أو للتنبيه إلى الاختلاف في نص الرواية، جاءت في الحاليين عن نفس الراوي.
