في هذا الكراس الصغير يذهب المؤلف إلى أن مهمة الشعر ليست عزل الإنسان عن العالم أو عزله عن ذاته انطلاقاً من إرادة سيطرة على الكون بواسطة اللغة، بل على العكس إذ أن الشعر في رأيه محاولة خلق مسارات وصل راشحة وبالغة الهشاشة داخل اللغة وبين اللغة والإنسان.
واللغة بنظر الكاتب هي الوسيطة المثلى بين الإنسان والعالم والشاعر هو بالتالي من تتم هذه الوساطة عبره، وحتى إن عزف الإنسان وابتعد وانصرف عن الشعر يبقى الشاعر من الناحية التكوينية ذاك الذي يتعلل ويتشرعن به وجود الإنسان على الأرض.
ويعترض الكاتب على اعتبار الشعر تمريناً، إذ لا يمكن أن يكون الشعر ألعوبة، لعبة لغوية، لكنه يمكن أن يكون أحياناً تمريناً روحانياً بالمعنى الذي يعتمده الصوفيون ولن يكون الشعر أبداً لغة تهبط من فوق: لغة قول يملي قوانينه على العالم ويسعى بكل الوسائل إلى إسناد أشياء هذا العالم.
