لا خلاف بين النقاد اليوم على أن الحسن بن هاني "أبو النواس" كان أقوى شعراء عصره حياة، وأعمقهم نفساً، وأخضهم خيالاً، وأكثرهم حظاً من الصراحة والظرف والفكاهة، وهو إلى هذا في طليعة المجددين من الشعراء الذين وصفوا الحياة كما شاهدوها وتكلفوها، فلم يعمد إلى المواربة، ولا تكلف التظاهر بما ليس فيه، وكان شأنه شأن الأديب الصادق، الذي أقبل على هذه الحياة فوصفها كما ألفها، ثم غادرها تاركاً في شعره مادة ترسم ألوانها وطرائقها، على أحسن حال وأصدق طريق، ومن الأسباب التي دعت المؤلف إلى التأريخ له، أنه مثل حياته وحياة كثيرين من الناس، أصدق تمثيل، وكان من شأن صراحته هذه أن تعرض للنقد الشديد والنكران العظيم في عهده.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض المؤلف بأسلوب دقيق لين لكبير من عظماء العرب، وعظيم علمائهم "أبو نواس" متناولاً حياته اللاهية العابثة بشيء من الرفق والتورية، ذاكراً ما تفرد به من الوصف الناعم للإماء والجواري يلبسن ذي العلمان، ويقمن بالخدمة في المجالس والحانات، واصفاً حياته المغمورة، وعبثه المتواصل، ومخالفته لما تواضع عليه الناس من التقاليد والأخلاق ونذر الفضيلة، وما اتصل بهذا وتعلق به، وأسبابه ودوافعه. وأنت حين تقرأ هذه الحياة الغريبة العجيبة، ليبلغن تلك العجب مبلغه، وليأخذك الذهول إلى أبعد الحدود والغايات، حيث تستشعر أن هذه الحياة التي كان يحياها النواسي في العهد العباسي الأول، ليست مما أداله الدهر وأزاله الزمن، فهي ما تزال ظاهرة حية قائمة، تجدها في كهوف (سان جرمان دي بريه) في باريس، معتقل الوجوديين والوجوديات، والمخنثين والغلاميات.
