تستهدف هذه الدراسة وضع اختبار لقياس النزعة العصبية ككل، وكذلك الأعصبية النفسية الأكثر شيوعاً. ولقد وقع اختيار الباحث على عصاب الفوبيا، الهستيريا، الاكتئاب، توهم المرض، الوسواس، والقلق وهي الأعصبية الستة الأكثر شيوعاً وانتشاراً ليشملها الاختبار وليكون صالحاً للإستخدام في البيئة العربية بعد تقنينه وإعداده للاستعمال بمعايير مصرية عربية.
كذلك تستهدف هذه الدراسة التعرف على مدى انتشار الأعصبية النفسية من عينة من شباب جامعة الإسكندرية من الطلبة ومعرفة أي منهما أكثر انتشاراً من غيره ومدى ارتباطها بعضها بعضاً، وغلى جانب ذلك فإن الدراسة الحالية تستهدف التعرف على تأثير بعض العوامل والمتغيرات على مدى المعاناة من الأعصبية النفسية أو النزعة العصابية ككل ومن كل عصاب على حدة.
ومن ذلك التعرف على أثر عوامل: الجنس (ذكور/إناث)، السن، التخصص العلمي (نظري وعملي)، الغرفة الدراسية (الأولى/مقابل الرابعة)، التعرف على أثر التفوق الدراسي على المعاناة من العصابية ككل والأعصبة الفرعية الستة، هل الطالب الأكثر تفوقاً من الناحية العملية يكون أكثر أم أقل معاناة من الأمراض النفسية؟ كذلك من بين ما تستهدفه هذه الدراسة التعرف على حكم الشباب على المستوى الخلقي السائد من عصرنا هدا، وعلاوة على ذلك فإن الدراسة الحالية تسعة إلى التعرف على نوع العلاقة بين الأعصبة النفسية والقيم والاتجاهات الخلقية السائدة.
