مع ازدياد سرعة نمط الحياة الحديثة وتعقدها وزيادة حدة المنافسة والصراع تزداد الأمراض السيكوماتية حدة وانتشارا بحيث أصبحت أمراض العصر. تلك الأمراض التي ترجع لأسباب نفسية أو أزمات اجتماعية وتوترات وصراعات وحرمان وقسوة بينما تتخذ أعرافها شكلاً جسيماً.

كما وتضمن الكتاب دراسة ميدانية للأمراض السيكوماتية لدى عينه من الشباب العربي لتكون مجرد مثال لما يمكن أن يجريه الباحث العربي في موضوع من الموضوعات الخطيرة التي باتت تهدد حياة إنسان العصر وزيادة في الإيضاح تم إفراد فصل خاص لدراسة خصائص الأمراض السيكوماتية وأنواعها، وفصل آخر لبيان وجه العلاقة بين الجسم وأحداث الحياة وفصل ثالث للطب السيكوماتي الحديث أي الطب النفسجسمي ووجهة نظر العلماء فيه. وأخيراً ينتهي الكتاب باستعراض أهم النظريات التي وضعت لتفسير نشأة الأمراض السيكوماتية.
