إن إدمان المخدرات هو حالة ثمالة دورية أو مزمنة محطة للفرد والمجتمع وتنشأ عن الاستخدام المتكرر للمخدرات. وهو يؤدي غلى تحطم الصحة وتدهورها. ويشير نصطلح الإدمان إلى اعتماد الجسم أو المريض على العقاقير أو المخدرات أو الكحول ثم المعاناة والآلام عندنا ينسحب هذا العقار ويبتعد عن متناول يد المريض.
كما أن الأخطار النفسية والعقلية والاجتماعية للإدمان لا تقل سوءاً عن الآثار الجسيمة حيث يتركز اهتمام المدمن على الحصول على العقار. ومن دون وعي يجد المدمن نفسه يتعامل مع مجرمين فينساق إلى الأعمال الإجرامية لغرض تأمين الأقوال التي تمكنه من الحصول على المخدرات. والجدير بالذكر أن هناك نوعين من الإدمان: الأول الإدمان النفسي أو السيكولوجي، والثاني هو الإدمان الفسيولوجي وهنا يصبح الفرد مقهوراً أمام إدمانه ويستمر التدهور والمتلاحق في شخصية المريض مع ظهور أعراض الانقطاع بسرعة عند توقف إمداد المدمن بالمخدر.
لقد وضع الدكتور عبد الرحمن عيسوي هذا الكتاب الأول من نوعه ليلقي الضوء على موضوع يحتل أهمية خاصة لدى المختصين وهو يقع في أربع عشر فصلاً، يبحث فيها المؤلف تأثير عوامل السن والجنس والمكانة الاجتماعية على الحكم بالسواء والشذوذ حيث يتوقف الحكم على سلوك معين على جنس وسن ومكانة من يقوم بهذا السلوك. ويبحث في معنى التكليف ومحدداته والاضطرابات الفصامية والسيكوباتية، كما يفصل الحديث عن طبيعة الإدمان والأخطار الجسيمة والعقلية والنفسية المترتبة على الإدمان. كما يعرض للفرق بين إدمان الخمور والمخدرات وعلاقة الانحرافات الجنسية بالإدمان ودور المؤسسات والمجتمع في الوقاية والعلاج من خطر الإدمان. ثم يقدم شرحاً وافياً للأساليب العلاجية النفسية والجسدية.
