يعدّ إلياس خوري من الأوائل الذين جعلوا من الحرب اللبنانية مادّة لكتابة سردية، فبدأ عهد إزدهار الرواية في لبنان بعد أن كانت فنّاً يطرح علامة إستفهام على ندرته هناك.
وقدّمت الرواية تجربة لا مثيل لها في العالم العربي، فأصبح التحوّل الأسلوبي والشكلي والإجتماعي متداخلاً في الرواية بشكل هائل.
ويعدّ إلياس خوري في طليعة الروائيين العرب من حيث البراعة في السرد الروائي والتخييل الفني؛ وهو أكثر الروائيين العرب المعاصرين بذلاً في الجهد في إعداد روايته: فمثلاً يقول عن رواية باب الشمس "بدأت الأعداد لمشروع "باب الشمس" قبل ست سنوات، وقد قرأت ما كتب حول هذا الموضوع".
ومثلما يبذل الجهد في إختيار الموضوع ويستقيه من التفاصيل اليومية التي يعيشها ومن التجربة الإنسانية الوجودية والحضارية، فهو يعتني أيضاً في إختيار الشكل والأسلوب واللغة: اللغة من حيث البساطة، والصحة والدقة، والدلالة.
