الفرضية التي يطرحها الكتاب هي أن العمارة العربية الإسلامية، تحاول التقليل من حجم ظهور النساء في الفضاءات المعمارية التي يقع لهذا السبب التدخل بعملها وبجمالياتها إذا تطلب الأمر. ثمة أيديولوجيا معروفة معادية للنساء تبرز في حالة "العمارة الذكورية" عبر وسائل ومواد ملموسة لا تقبل إلا القليل من التأويل: الحجر والملاط والخشب وغيره. إن اعتبار المرأة عورة ليست فحسب فكرة مجردة ولكنها تجد لها تمثيلات صريحة في أنماط البناء والتصاميم والمساقط المعمارية في العالم العربي.
كانت وظيفة العمارة الأساسية واضحة على الدوام للجمهور العريض: السكن. لكن بين الوظيفة المعمارية التي هي بداهة وبين منظومة المعايير الأخلاقية التي تشتغل العمارة بين ظهرانيها ثمة فسحة للتأمل. لسنا هنا في مقام الوظيفة لكن في سلم معياري، بل أخلاقي، للعمارة.
يذكرنا الكتاب بأن فكرتي (السلاملك) و(الحرملك) مشبعتان برائحة ذكورية فواحة، وقد صيغت كقاعدة ذهبية للعمارة العربية الطالعة، بدورها، من مصادر فكرية ثابتة تبقى اليوم بطريقة وأخرى على استخدامات السلاملك والحرملك وإن زعمت أنها تجاوزتهما. يسعى الكتاب إلى تسليط المزيد من الضوء عليها وعلى ما يجاورها م ن مفهومات أكثر التباساً وغموضاً مما له المعنى ذاته.
