يعتبر موضوع عقيدة القضاء والقدر عقيدة إيمانية أساسية للمسلم. ذلك أن المسلم إذا سئل عن إيمانياته أجاب: أؤمن بالله وبملائكته وبكتبه وبرسله وباليوم الآخر، و"بالقدر خيره وشرّه من الله تعالى". والحقيقة هي أن هذه العقائد الإيمانية المذكورة، تعتبر في حقيقة أمرها، أساس تعاليم الدين الإسلامي بأجمعها. فهي تشكل عماده ومنطلقاته. وبينما تدور عقيدة وجود الذات الإلهية وصفاتها حول وجود الله تعالى نفسه، فإن عقيدة "القضاء والقدر" التي خصصها الكتاب هذا بالبحث والكلام، تدور حول علاقة الله بمخلوقاته، من حيث مشيئته، وقدرته، وهيمنته وقوانين ربوبيته، وما يتبع ذلك من أمور. من هنا كانت عقيدة "القضاء والقدر" بذكر كون الله جل شأنه إلهاً حياً وقيوماً وقادراً ورباً وفعالاً لما يريد. يوضح المؤلف من خلال هذا الكتاب علاقة الله بمخلوقاته على اعتبار أنه لن يكون بمقدور الإنسان إدراك حقيقة هذه العلاقة، وأن الحقيقة هذه يستحيل أن تكتشف إلا عن أحد طريقين: الأول يتمثل في الطريقة العلمية، والثاني يتمثل في تجارب المؤمنين الشخصية. من خلال هذين الطريقين يحاول المؤلف توضيح هذه العلاقة الجوهرية في حياة المسلم.
