تحدث الكتاب بأسلوب شائق عن التاريخ العريق لثمار الكاكاو الثمينة منذ أن استخدمت بديلاً عن النقود في المبادلات التجارية وحتى يومنا هذا.. تنمو شجرة الكاكاو في المناطق التي تبعد عشرين درجة عن خط الاستواء وعلى ارتفاعات لا تتعدى 300 متر، وهي تحتاج لظل دائم ورطوبة متواصلة وحرارة لا تنخفض عن ستة عشر درجة مئوية، وعلاوة على ذلك فإنها تحتاج لرعاية متواصلة لحمايتها من أمراض مفاجئة قد تقضي على مزارعها في أسابيع قليلة، كما أن الجراب الذي يحتوي على حبوبها وينمو على جذوعها ينبغي حصاده بطريقة خاصة تحمي البراعم المجاورة التي ستثمر في الموسم القادم.
وعلى الرغم من أن ظروف زراعتها تتوفر فقط في مناطق تبعد آلاف الكيلومترات عن أماكن استهلاكها وتصنيعها الرئيسية، ومن كل ما سبق من ظروف أخرى قاسية، فقد خاض الإنسان حروباً عديدة من أجل السيطرة على مناطق إنتاجها، وأدى بعض تلك الحروب إلى القضاء على حضارات ازدهرت قروناً، وإلى فناء شعوب كثيرة.
ومع تطور طرق تصنيع تلك الحبوب الثمينة، وإنتاج أشكالها المختلفة التي نعرفها اليوم، تطورت كذلك طرق استهلاكها مع مرور الزمن وتقدم الصناعة، فمن الشراب الذي أصبح تقديمه في المقاهي شائعاً منذ قرون، إلى أنواع الشوكولاتة المختلفة الداكنة والمرة والشقراء الحلوة والبيضاء، بل إنه ليمكن القول إنه من الصعب أن يخلو بيت في العالم من أحد منتجات الكاكاو الكثيرة، وعلى رأسها الشوكولاتة.
